of my 6 documented paternal grandfathers only 2 have tombstones!
I recently was doing some work on my paternal Sheaffer grandfather line when I realized that although I have been able to document back 6 grandfather’s to John Schaefer 1773-1858 but only 2 have visible tombstones. The only 2 tombstones are of my grandfather Harry G Sheaffer and my 2nd great-grandfather John William Sheaffer 1865-1927. Why do the others not have a tombstone? I believe all had headstones at one time or another but for varied reasons they no longer have a headstone. Starting with my great-grandfather Ralph D Sheaffer 1887-1946 I know was not given a tombstone but is buried in same plot where brothers and a sister are, and who have a common obelisk with names and dates on it. On John E Sheaffer I believe he may have had a tombstone as his wife has one but no visible tombstone of John. Henry Sheaffer according to 1880 Census was living in Ness City Kansas where he died in December of 1880. It is said he was buried in a family cemetery there which has long ago disappeared. His father John Schaefer I have found church records with his name and dates on them but do not indicate if a headstone was placed. I have been unable to locate a tombstone in cemetery but have found that the church itself has many old headstones from the cemetery but none appear to be John Schaefer. So the only 2 who have headstones are my grandfather Harry G Sheaffer and his grandfather John William Sheaffer. Here is my list of grandfather’s:
5th Great-Grandfather: John Schaefer
4th Great-Grandfather: Henry Sheaffer
3rd Great-Grandfather: John E Sheaffer
2nd Great-Grandfather: John William Sheaffer
Great-Grandfather: Ralph D Sheaffer Sr.
Grandfather: Harry G Sheaffer Sr.
