The Sheaffer family has had members serve in every war since the American Revolution. Fortunately I have not been able to find any closely realated ancestors who have been a casualty of these wars except one. Ralph D Sheaffer Jr. was my grandfather’s older and closest brother, he was KIA on 14 Mar 1945 at Iwo Jima. He was a good looking man with a new bride and a bright future but paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country on that fateful day.

Ralph was buried at Iwo Jima and was eventually bought back home after the war in 1948. He was flown back to home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and buried in Paxtang Cemetery in Paxtang, Pensylvania.
